“And I’m supposed to just sit there and...breathe?” I asked, annoyed. My ass was already going numb.

“No, not just breathe,” Elizar explained testily. “Open your mind. Feel the magic around you, feel my magic.”

“And what is that good for?”

“You are to detect whether the magic means you harm or not, whether it’s about to be used against you, and exactly where it’s coming from. Therefore, close your damn eyes and shut the hell up.” I snorted and threw back my hair. Elizar stood in front of me.

Before I closed my eyes, I gave him a final middle finger. He was not impressed by this gesture.

It became dark around me. I heard only sporadic soft conversations and Elizar’s footsteps sometimes to my left, sometimes to my right. Breathe, open the mind.

A few moments passed in which nothing happened, but then I drifted off. It was like a lucid dream. Elizar’s footsteps grew quieter and quieter until I couldn’t tell where he was standing.

The back of my neck tingled, grew warm. I got goosebumps. Abruptly, the warmth disappeared and my skin craved the feeling again. The air changed, it became colder. From my left side, I perceived a malicious presence. It was as if it was waiting for me, as if it had a pulse.

The presence crept up on me, but before it could get too close, I slowed it down with a wall of magic. A breath later, it was gone, the air feeling pleasant again.

I waited for the next attack, but it didn’t come.

Instead of the cold I had expected, sweet warmth nuzzled around my crumbling shield, causing it to collapse. I didn’t mind; it was liberating.

The magic snaked up my arm, but I wasn’t scared, because I knew it wouldn’t hurt me. It was like a primal instinct. The magic left a meandering trail of tingling on my upper arm until it snaked around my throat and then my chest.

My breathing became shallower. As it made its second circuit, a soft sigh escaped me. It felt so natural, so right.

I felt the magic caress my cheek and kiss my lower lip. The touch was so delicate I might as well have imagined it.

I leaned forward, wanting to dive further into this feeling, to bathe in it, but it was gone—I found only a cold emptiness.

At the last second, I realized I was under attack again, this time from the right, and raised the shield. The cold presence bounced off and disappeared into nothingness.

When nothing else happened, I hesitantly opened my eyes. I blinked at the harsh light but couldn’t see Elizar anywhere.

“Watch your back. Many won’t have the balls to attack you from the front,” Elizar whispered in my ear as he pressed something cold to my throat. I swallowed.

“Fight back,” he commanded. I froze in place. Sharp objects in very sensitive places were not my thing.

I could push him away from me with magic, but wasn’t keen on the blade slicing my throat.

“You’ve made your point, now get the fuck away from me,” I said between gritted teeth.
